The year is 1966 and the football World Cup has come to England. With the USSR due to play at Roker Park and the fear of the 'Reds Under the Bed' exemplified by the upcoming Polaris submarine landing at the nearby Jarrow docks, tensions are running high. CND protesters, lead by radical students from Durham University, are the last thing the police need when the world media is on their doorstep awaiting the upcoming football match. Gently and Bacchus investigate the murder of a well know Lefty academic, found dead in the docks post a CND rally. This takes them onto the Durham University campus - an ancient temple of learning struggling to come to terms with the novel influx of students from the working class and brash, radical, academics. Sexual and Social rebellion is everywhere in the air and to the young and optimistic these forces seem inevitable and unstoppable. Bacchus is horrified yet fascinated by the promiscuity on display. Mercer and his accomplices - Kelly, Olssen, Quinn and Yates - are brought to trial, where they show no respect for the court, laughing, smirking and throwing paper planes. Mel is upset when the judge requests she stops crying lest it influence the jury but Dave explains that the defendants are receiving no such warnings so that the jury can see their true natures. Nonetheless she and Steve are troubled that the defending barristers seem to be successfully discrediting the prosecution witnesses. However the testimonies of the brave Claire Olssen and redemption-seeking Kevin, given anonymously on CCTV, plus the defendants' refusal to take the stand, swing the jurors into recording a verdict of guilty with the boys' lying families also being convicted. Dave believes he has a lead when Kevin Moody, encouraged by his sister Sandra, admits to the police that Mercer gave him the gun but the crown prosecutor still feels there is insufficient evidence to proceed. Dave hopes this will make the culprits more confident about getting away with it and steps up his pursuit. There is a set-back when Claire Olssen is bullied by the killer's family and gang into giving a false alibi so that Dave is relieved when Kevin finally agrees to enter witness protection and names Mercer and his associates, thus making arrests possible. As Rhys's family attends his funeral Mercer's friends Dean Kelly, James Yates and Nathan Quinn all alibi each other, Yates disposing of anything to incriminate him. A bug on Yates' house leads Dave to another of their circle, Jordan Olssen, who bullies his mother Claire - Claire's statement going some way to discredit the gang's stories though Dave still has no clear evidence to make an arrest. A raid on the house of dim teen-ager Kevin Moody recovers the suspected murder weapon and Dave gambles on him incriminating the others in exchange for immunity from prosecution but tests on the gun prove to be inconclusive. Holly is the first prosecution witness via a CCTV link and, despite the defendants' barristers onslaught on her she is open and honest in her testimony, earning her parents' love and respect. With Amber's delusional attitude preventing her from giving evidence, Ruby is the next, equally convincing, witness, leading to the press gunning for the Rotherham police's ineptitude in handling the original case. All of the accused are found guilty and imprisoned. Maggie however sees a flaw in the operation, suspecting further grooming involving Amber, which she uses to provide closure. An end title brings up to date the fates of those concerned - two of them being shamefully treated. It also lists the many areas of Britain where the grooming of under-age girls has been exposed. In the present a young mother called Lara, a descendant of Nathan, is troubled by seeing Gabriel's ghost and travels to Shepzoy to commune with him and persuade him to tell Nathan he forgives him. In 1895 Nathan's increasingly odd behaviour forces Charlotte to take over the management of the farm, dealing with handsome neighbour William Payne, rather to Nathan's annoyance. Lara is the ghostly woman who keeps appearing to Nathan and she aims to ease his grief, appearing to Charlotte and stopping Nathan from killing himself. An unusual object is unearthed on the farm, leading Nathan's employees to tell him they believe that it has caused the recent supernatural events and its discovery will bring them to an end. As Nathan is made aware the villagers believe that his presence is attracting ghosts the locals prepare for All Hallows Eve but are nervous as this is the anniversary of a seventeenth century massacre by Roundheads and there are fears that their spirits will return to wreak havoc. Nathan, however, is more concerned with contacting a female ghost - not Clarity - that he has seen and believes is orchestrating the hauntings.
